What Happens on Valborg…

Valborg also known as “sista april” (last of April), is the celebration of the arrival of Spring. Long months of cold, ice and snow are (hopefully) over. The days are getting longer and excitement is pumping throughout the Nordic countries and Valborg is the climax of this ‘beginning of the good season’. Celebrations occur throughout Sweden but the biggest and best student tradition is here in Uppsala.

Students from all over Sweden and the world congregate in Uppsala for a few days, which are jam-packed with events. All thirteen Student Nations are open and full of people. As the weather will hopefully be nice, (ignoring latest forecasts which predict it won’t) all the gardens will be open and transformed into festival style concert arenas and open air clubs. Come rain or shine nobody will even notice if the weather is miserable; people have been looking forward to this for far too long and a bit of rain will not dampen their spirits.

The night before the night before Valborg Most nations have events, some have big concerts in the gardens with famous artists whilst others have smaller themed events like special pubs, clubs and so on.

Kvalborg (29/04/2017)
The night before Valborg, a very important festivity Many students coming from out of town are already roaming the streets of Uppsala and all the nations have big events ; the excitement is real, anticipation is mounting and the countdown clock on Carolina Rediviva library’s balcony has more and more zeros. The big day From early in the morning until, well, early in the morning the next day, people will be out and about celebrating life. Check out our special article on the big day here.

Majmiddag (01/05/2017)
Some call it ‘the longest lunch in Sweden’ as it starts at 12:00 and finishes in the evening at around 19:00 or sometimes even later During this dinner each nation holds many speeches in honour of the nation and the century long history and traditions. Honorary memberships are handed out to former nation members or people from the region the nation represents, who have excelled in their field. Also during the dinner, some junior members are promoted to ‘seniors of the nation’, after having been selected and voted by Landksap (the nation’s general election). Some nations follow this dinner with a little club afterwards known as ‘Finalborg’. Tickets for this event needed to be purchased in advance.
