New students welcomed on Arrival day

The new spring semester is getting closer and both former students and students-to-be are preparing for studies. During Thursday the 16th of January, Arrival day was arranged at the Segerstedts building, to welcome around 400 international students arriving to get settled in at Uppsala university. Ergo got to greet some of them.

Laura arrived in Uppsala yesterday from France. She has just visited the Uppsala University Housing Office’s desk to get her keys to the student room in Flogsta where she will be staying. She will be studying the masters programme in education and sociology here in Uppsala during the spring semester.
– Sweden was an easy pick due to the broad amount of classes taken in english. Also I’m not afraid of the cold or the short days, and I was interested in discovering the Scandinavian vibe, she says.

What are you looking forward to with your stay?
– To discover the city of Uppsala and the surroundings like Stockholm as well. Also to meet and get to know new people.

Also 21 year old Lasse from Hamburg, Germany, has found his way to the Segerstedt building.
– I’ve never been to Scandinavia so I wanted to take the chance by studying here.

He admits that Finland originally was his first choice, but that he is happy with his second choice; Sweden and Uppsala. The idea of a smaller university city with a rich student life was what appealed to Lasse. During the spring semester at Uppsala university he will be continuing his bachelor studies in engineering.

– I’m looking forward to the student life, exploring the student Nations, Valborg in Uppsala and doing outdoor activities, he says.
– And of course the University and study experience here, he adds with a laugh.

Rebekah, 22, from Taiwan has already had some time to get used to living in Sweden during the autumn semester. She studied bachelor studies in business at Linköping university, which she will now continue at Uppsala university.

How are you finding Sweden so far?
– Good, but cold!, Rebekah says.

She will also be staying in Flogsta during the spring. Study-wise she is looking forward to joining discourse sessions in her studies, which she tells is different from studies in Taiwan where there are only lectures and exams.
– I’m mostly focused on my studies during the time here since I’m a bit shy and introverted, but I also hope to meet some new people, she says.

Uppsala University has seven international bachelor programmes, around 80 international master’s programmes and approximately 680 independent courses in english. During Arrival day around 400 international students arrived to the Segerstedts Building to get settled in, some of them returning to their second semester at Uppsala university.
